Fear of being overrun by another flood following the breakdown of bridges and threats of gully erosions has enveloped the people of Taraba State.

The collapse of bridges and the threat of gully erosions have not also spared most states, especially those along the highways.

The latest such bridge collapse is the Dan-Kuturu bridge in Mutum-Biyu in Gassol local government council which occurred in Jalingo.

The bridge was earlier in the week overrun by a heavy flow of water which also washed away homes and valuables of residents and also forced motorists to seek alternative roads into Jalingo.

Speaking to Press on the development, residents of the community identified the government’s failure to be proactive, as a major reason for the collapse of the bridge.

Lamenting that major bridges across the state were also on the verge of collapsing, an Engineer at the State Ministry of Works, who did not want his name in print, said all efforts to draw government attention to “the faulty bridges “have failed.

Press gathered that residents hardly now go to bed with their eyes closed following the rate at which gully erosions have continued to ravage major roads and communities in the state.

“We are now leaving in fear especially whenever it is raining because of the way and manner erosions have continued to eat deep into our community “. Alhaji Husseini Ahmad lamented.

He claimed that the authorities concerned were doing nothing to address the situation.

The collapsed bridges, Ahmad said has caused hardship for community members as their major source of livelihood, which is farming have been severely jeopardised by the flood.

The bridges affected Press reports are on federal government roads and could disrupt the construction of the proposed Mambilla Hydro Power Project in the state.
