Plateau State government condemns death of student killed by stray bullet
The Plateau State government on Tuesday said it regretted the death of one of the students of Plateau State Polytechnic as reported by the police.
Several students of the Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos campus, were on Monday protesting the suspension of their examination which was to commence on Monday.
The protesting students, who blocked the road early on Monday morning, said they were not told about the suspension of the examination, saying they slept in the classes on Sunday reading for the examination.
The students expressed concern over breaks in the academic calendar occasioned by strikes, suspension of academic activities, lamenting that they were spending more years in school, as against the number of years required for their programs.
However, during the protest, security personnel who arrived at the scene reportedly began shooting at the students, injuring many students who were later taken to hospital
A statement by Dan Manjang, the Commissioner for Information and Communication in the state revealed that one of the students, who was hit by a stray bullet and taken to hospital for treatment did not survive.
The statement described the death as a very sad development which the Government totally condemns and has therefore directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of the student.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased student, the Government assured that it will not spare anyone found culpable in the death of the student as it is determined to ensure that justice is done.
However, the Deputy Governor has directed a Government delegation to visit the family of the deceased student to sympathise with them over the sad situation.
