High blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension, has been described as a silent killer if left unchecked and which sometimes presents no signs and symptoms before it strikes.

A family physician, Dr. Olakunle Moteemi, who made this revelation while talking to Press in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, also stated that most times hypertension presents signs and symptoms which are mostly ignored due to the lack of health awareness amongst Nigerian People.

Dr. Moteemi noted that hypertension occurs as a result of lifestyle habits which include smoking, drinking, lack of sleep, sedentary lifestyle, stress and heredity.

He stated that high blood pressure, if left unchecked, can lead to stroke which may result in death depending on the severity.

The physician disclosed that hypertension could cause blindness, heart attack, kidney failure, low sex drive and erectile dysfunction.

Means of prevention the physician advocated included lifestyle change and proper health education and monitoring for individuals above 45 years of age.

According to him, these lifestyle changes include regularly checking blood pressure and faithfully taking medications as prescribed by the medical practitioner.

He also maintained that regular exercise and sleep is needed to enhance blood circulation and refresh the body.

Dr. Moteemi cautioned against the consumption of salt and fatty foods adding that salt has the tendency to raise the blood pressure while fatty foods contain cholesterol which blocks blood vessels and makes the heart work more in order to pump blood to all parts of the body.
