The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has ordered the relocation of solar street lights project in private residences of some highly placed individuals in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The order was made following the discovery of the anomaly by operatives of the commission’s constituency projects tracking team which began on Friday in the state.
The area where the anomalies were discovered included highbrow Ministry of Agriculture settlement, and Oloje Federal housing estate, all in Ilorin.
According to the tracking team, “the solar street lights were meant to be installed in communities for public use and not in private residences of influential individuals.”
The team, therefore “ordered the immediate relocation of the facilities or payment of such by concerned individuals, failure of which, the contractors would be held responsible while the owner of the residences would be prosecuted.”
Press reports that the team also uncovered during the tracking exercise shortfalls in the numbers of street lights installed in some areas against the actual numbers which were budgeted for in the contract.
It decried the lack of billboards at the project sites to indicate projects being executed.
The commission is tracking a total of 1,500 solar street lights along with other projects spread across the three senatorial districts in the state as part of constituency projects executed between 2015 and 2019.
The exercise which kicked off on June 23, 2020, is taking place simultaneously in 16 states across the country including Kwara State.
