Group condemns violence on Fulani communities in Kwara KWARA-1

A group, Gan-Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria, GAFDAN, Kwara State chapter, has condemned the violence ignited in Fulani communities in Oke-Ero and Omu-Aran towns in Kwara state last week.

In a phone chat with Press in Ilorin on Sunday, chairman of the association, Alhaji Ali Mohammed Jonwuro, described the unwarranted attacks on Fulanis as unacceptable.

Press recalls that some angry youths attacked the Fulani communities and set some houses and vehicles ablaze following their alleged complicity in kidnapping cases in the Oke-Ero and Omu-Aran towns.

Some suspects including the alleged kidnap kingpin, Ramoni, said to be a Fulani, and one Bunmi, an indigene of Odo Owa town, were arrested and handed over to the police at Omu-Aran area command office.

However, GAFDAN chairman, in defence of innocent Fulanis, said ” not all Fulanis are criminals.

“In every society, there are good and bad eggs, but we should not generalise crimes committed by a few.

“Let the law enforcement agencies identify the bad eggs and deal with them As stated by the laws of the land rather than resorting to violence which is affecting the innocent ones,” Jonwuro added.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the state police command to get to the root of the matter and apprehend those responsible for the violence in the areas.

The state Police Commissioner, Mohammed Lawal Bagega, last week visited the troubled areas with a powerful delegation of officers in the command, where he warned youths against jungle justice on suspects or property.

Bagega, said anyone caught and arrested would be made to face the full weight of the law.

At the meeting held at Omu-Aran with traditional rulers of the three affected local government areas, security stakeholders, vigilante groups, professional hunters and sister security agencies, Bagega, emphasised the need for peaceful coexistence and cautioned people against taking the laws into their hands.
