Global coronavirus cases, deaths drop – WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported a decline in COVID-19 cases globally.
The UN agency stated that there was a 17 percent drop compared with last week.
On Friday, Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, also said the number of deaths had reduced.
“This is the fourth week of declining cases. The number of deaths also fell for the second week in a row, with 88,000 new deaths reported last week,” it said.
He linked the declines to countries’ stringent implementation of public health measures.
Ghebreyesus, in spite of that, warned that despite the positive development, it was not yet time to let down guard.
The WHO DG added that the virus continues to circulate widely, with new variants emerging.
“Every time the virus mutates, it has the potential to blunt the effectiveness of our vaccines, medicines and tests,” he said.
The health body advocated an urgent need for a coordinated approach to variant surveillance and more evaluation to help decipher the potential impact on vaccine potency.
