Flood cuts off, isolates many communities in Nguru – Yobe lawmaker cries out
The member representing Nguru Central Constituency at the Yobe State House of Assembly, Hon. Lawan Sani Inuwa has decried that some communities from Nguru town have been cut off by flood occasioned by torrential rain.
The member who made the case on Tuesday while presenting a motion of urgent public importance at the floor of the House also said the menace has destroyed farmlands and property worth millions of Naira within the constituency, thereby affecting highly vulnerable persons who rely heavily on subsistence agriculture as means of survival.
Inuwa charged authorities concern in the state to find workable solutions to the seasonal catastrophe bedeviling Nguru Central.
He also called on the National Emergency Management Agency,(NEMA), and Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, (YOSEMA), to quickly assess the damages caused and to immediately intervene in order to arrest the situation.
Supporting the Motion, the Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa and Hon. Maina Digma Gana stressed the need for government to sensitize members of the public to avoid constructing houses on water ways as well as dumping of refuse in the drainages especially in the urban and semi-urban areas.
Presiding over plenary, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Mohammed Isah Bello called on members of the National Assembly representing Yobe State to look into the matter by ensuring that the federal government intervenes to control the annual flood disaster across the State.
In another development, the House has adopted the report of its Standing Committee on Finance and Appropriation on the 2020 Fiscal Responsibility Board annual report and audit accounts.
