Family Law specialist advises Nigerian People against returning bride price to groom’s family BRIDE-PRICE

A Family Law specialist, Mrs. Dorcas Aderemi, has advised Nigerian People against returning bride price to groom’s family during the process of a customary marriage.

Aderemi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview in Lagos on Thursday that such an act invalidates marriages.

The practice of returning the bride price by the family, usually on the grounds that their daughter is not for sale, is common in the South-West.

"The cogent procedure or process for establishing a customary marriage is the payment of the bride price.”

The expert insisted the money is important, covered for in the law and also scriptural in religion.

Aderemi said the group of society that returns the bride price, especially the Yorubas, should stop it.
