A group representing persons with disability in Nigeria, Association for Comprehensive Empowerment of Nigerian People with Disability, ASCEND, has announced Dr Ifeanyi Ubah as their choice for the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State.
The National President of the association, Chief Cosmas Ikechukwu Okoli in a press briefing, Thursday, said that there were over 200,000 disabled persons in Anambra State, all of whom would be mobilized to vote for Ubah.
He described Ubah as the only candidate standing for the election who had a manifesto that outlined special plans for persons with disability in the state.
Speaking on how the association arrived at their choice of Ubah, Okoli said the group had first written to all the candidates, asking that they send in their manifesto for assessment, but only Ubah sent his, which fortunately contained programmes for disabled people.
He said this led to Uba’s automatic endorsement.
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of people with disability in Nigeria as we take the first decisive step in the politics of Nigeria, with the endorsement of Dr Ifeanyi Ubah for governor in Anambra State.
“We opened our doors to all aspirants to engage us, but except for Ifeanyi Ubah who reached out to us and presented his manifesto, we make bold to say that no other aspirant responded to our overture. Ubah even informed us of his plan to reach out and empower our members even before the election”, he said.
Revealing the method his group would employ to give Ubah victory, Okoli said that besides the 200,000 votes of disabled people in the state, “persons with disability in the state would go all out to speak with their loved ones on the need to vote Ubah who is the only one that has a programme for us”.
He said that with the sympathy which people usually had for their members, it is believed that each member of their group would attract at least two votes for Ubah.
He also stressed that solving the problems of people with disability would go a long way to reduce joblessness among their members.
The union leader listed some of the programmes of the candidate to his members to include a promise of equal opportunity for all, putting an end to economic dependency, stigmatization and discrimination against disabled people and the enactment of a law to protect the rights of persons with disability.
Others were the creation of an agency for disability affairs, which would be overseen by a person with disability and charged with the responsibility of ensuring that persons with disability were not discriminated against in any government activities and programmes.
