Obotim Nsit community in Nsit Ibom local government area of Akwa Ibom State has again requested N7.6 billion from the Seven Energy Company, an oil servicing firm as compensation for the havoc caused by the 2016 gas pipeline explosion in the community
The gas pipeline which runs through the community from Ukanafun to Calabar, Cross River State, exploded at Asang Community High School in the area, killing more than 28 people and rendering the land unproductive as alleged.

He said the compensation would enable them clean up the mess that the explosion caused.
The village head, in spite of that, called on both the state and federal governments to assist the community.
His words, “We are still requesting N7.6 billion compensation from the company to enable us clean up the mess. We are also urging the Akwa Ibom and federal government to intercede so that we have our lives back.
“Since after the gas pipeline explosion, we have been having series of building collapses and health issues, especially, heart attacks.
Our rainwater is always black and unfit for consumption as a result of the gas emissions which is still in the air. We can’t even breathe good air.
The village head noted that the roof of the school, Asang Community High School where the incident occurred was ripped open and has remained in that state as the oil company operating in the area did not make any effort to renovate it, adding that students writing WAEC exams in the school had to stop writing exams to allow the rain to stop because of the leaking roofs.
