13 feared killed, 20 houses razed in Benue communal clash

At least, 13 persons are said to have been killed and 20 houses destroyed in a fresh communal crisis that erupted between the youth of Angbaaye and Aturuku communities in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue state.

The clash, Notice.Com.Ng gathered broke out Sunday night when members of the two communities had retired to bed.

Sources said the crisis ensued when some students from the Angbaaye community who were coming back from school encountered some youth that barricaded the road and denied them passage.

Fight broke out when the students insisted that the road must be opened and forcefully dismantled the barricade.

However, another version of the story said that there had been a long-standing misunderstanding between youth of the two communities on the issues of armed robbery and cult related activities.

It was gathered that the youth of both communities have been attacking each other and robbing residents of valuables for a while now before Sunday clash.

The latest night violence left over 20 houses razed by the demonstrating youth who killed and injured scores of persons.

The Benue state Commissioner of Police, Mr Adams Audu who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Makurdi said, “we are trying to get the facts. But there were clashes in those localities and the police are on top of the situation.” He stated that houses were burnt and persons were killed, but the Command was yet to ascertain the number of casualties.

Audu said his men had been drafted to the scene to maintain law and order.
