Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers
1. Hon. Yekini Idiaye, the Deputy Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, and four other lawmakers have declared their support for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the forthcoming governorship election.
They are among the 10 lawmakers that were inaugurated in July 2019 while 14 others remain to be inaugurated due to the crisis that rocked the APC then.
2. Shoprite Holdings Limited, a South African company with hundreds of outlets in Nigeria, says it may not continue operation in the country.
The company in its “Operational and Voluntary Trading Update” released on Monday, said this was due to the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic.
3. Nigeria Police detectives have arrested seven armed robbers, including two soldiers says one serving, one dismissed says for alleged robbery of a bullion van in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The Police Situation Report (SITREP) said IRT Detectives with technical Intelligence Support from TIU arrested one Alfred Robinson, 45, a native of Gelegele Town in Ovia North LGA of Edo State on 1/8/2020 in Asaba, Delta State.
4. The Federal Capital Territory Administration, on Monday, announced that all schools in Abuja can re-open for students preparing for their WASSCE and BECE examinations on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.
A statement released by the Ag. Secretary for Education, Umaru A. Marafa, on Monday, said all schools are expected to put COVID-19 measures and guidelines given by the PTF in place before they can be certified ready for resumption by the Department of Quality Assurance of the Education.
5. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, has insisted that she never said every Nigerian received COVID-19 palliative during the lockdown.
Farouq on Monday at the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja, said it is impossible to give palliative to all Nigerian People.
6. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday night, announced 288 new cases of COVID-19.
It brings the current tally in the country to 44,129.
7. The federal government will release new protocols for the next phase of efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country by Thursday.
This was disclosed by the National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Dr Sani Aliyu, during Monday’s press briefing in Abuja.
8. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that it is working hard to ensure that Nigerian People have access to the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines when available.
Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of NCDC, who gave the assurance during the Presidential Task Force (PTF) briefing on COVID-19 on Monday in Abuja, said that the centre was working with the global community to ensure access.
9. Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, on Monday, constituted an 8-man probe panel to investigate the Federal government allocations accruing to the 16 local government councils in the State.
The panel will also probe the councils’ share of the internally generated revenue from May 29, 2019 to date.
10. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has insisted that it didn’t substitute the candidates of the African Action Congress (AAC) or any other political party for the October 10 governorship election in Ondo State.
INEC, in a statement by Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, on Monday, said it received only one submission from the AAC through its dedicated online portal for candidate nomination.
