Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers
1. End SARS protesters on Wednesday stormed the National Assembly in Abuja.
Hundreds of them moved in a long convoy of vehicles chanting solidarity songs, calling for the proscription of the newly-established SWAT.
2. Nigeria Police have announced that members of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) will not be deployed to the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT).
Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said No personnel of the defunct SARS will be selected to be part of the new Tactical Team.
3. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor E. A Adeboye, has told protesters to “comport themselves orderly” as they “express their grievances within the confines of what God and the law of the land allows”.
Adeboye was reacting to the protests to scrap the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which has been going on for over a week.
4. The Osun State Government has lamented that the ongoing #EndSARS protest has been hijacked by some hoodlums.
The Secretary to the State government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji, in a statement on Wednesday evening disclosed that some elements with ulterior motives and evil intentions had infiltrated the ranks of peaceful protesters of the State.
5. The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, has revealed that the National Identity Number (NIN) will soon be made mandatory for Citizens for accessing government services and interventions.
Minister in charge of the ministry, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), said this when he received a briefing from the Management team of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on their activities following the final transfer of the supervision of the commission to the ministry on the 7th October 2020.
6. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has told Nigerian People that there’s no difference between the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and the newly formed Special Weapons and Tactics, SWAT.
Kanu, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, said that what he described as the high powered deception of the government will only stop by ending the country.
7. Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has claimed there are no signs that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is ready to respect the rights of Nigerian People.
Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday night, Falana also criticized the federal government for setting up the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Unit (SARS).
8. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced 179 new COVID-19 infections and 1116 fatalities in the country.
NCDC said Nigeria’s total number of confirmed cases is now 60,834.
9. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, has joined the End SARS campaign.
He tweeted the hashtag at 9:40 pm Nigerian time on Wednesday.
10. Catriona Laing, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, is in Lagos.
She arrived in the State on Wednesday from Abuja, the nation’s capital to visit Ex-Governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.
